It has been my experience that African violets seem to prefer being a bit "pot bound" Mine tend not to bloom until the appear a bit crowded in their container.

They also need a fair amount of sunlight to bloom. I keep mine on the covered front porch in summer where they get lots of bright but no direct sun light, and they bloom all summer.
