Swelling in or around a dog's neck can be due to a variety of things, from a superficial abscess of insect bite/sting to metabolic disorder such as hypothyroidism to infection such as anthrax to cancer of the throat. If the dog appears otherwise healthy, you can watch the swelling carefully for a day or so to see if it resolves on its own. However, if the dog appears to be sleepy or lethargic, or if it is having trouble breathing, this is a medical emergency that needs addressing immediately.

There are several possible reasons for your dog's foot to be swollen. First would be a foreign body, such as a sticker or nail, imbedded in the pad - this would need to be removed by a veterinarian and probably some antibiotics and a tetanus shot given as well. Another option is simple infection in the foot, or an insect sting or a bite.

Another common reason is injury, such as a strained ligament or tendon or a bone bruise.

In an older dog, I would start to think of chronic diseases such as gout (rare in dogs, but it can happen) or cancer.

Anything could have happened to your dog when you weren't home. Dogs generally don't swell up unless it's hurting pretty bad - I'd get it checked out immediately. He may have a fractured toe or foot if there are no visible signs of injury.

You should contact your vet and get x-rays (to find out if it's broken) and in the meantime you should probably get some kind of ice like an icepack or a bag of frozen peas and wrap it around the swollen ankle.

This could be anything from a foreign body to trauma (such as a pulled ligament or broken bone) to infection to cancer. If there are no signs of systemic infection and your dog is limping around on the foot, you may be able to watch him closely for a few days to see if it gets better. If it doesn't, or the foot looks like it is getting worse, you should take your dog to a veterinarian for examination and diagnosis.

Take it to the vet, there may be glass, plastic, staple or something sharp stuck in it, if not there may be an infected cut on its foot.

If it were to step on something sharp and then it doesn't get treated and it gets infected.
