The cell phone was a very important invention because of its convenience and the extension of innovation and technology it spurred. Cell phones proves that our technology's transformations are exponential (meaning that the rate of change cannot be evenly measured for a long amount of time).

A great example of this is the car phone in the 1970s (one of the first "mobile" phones that were marketed for its convenience) to the iphones that we have in a short period of 40 years.
