Well gee, let's think about it like this for a minute:
I never went to college. In fact, I dropped out of school when I was 16 and went to work for my cousin, washing tools in his auto-body shop. After a couple years, I had an argument with my cousin and I quit working for him. That was when I bought an old car for $1700 and started delivering the newspaper in the city. The money was great, but I had to get up at 3:30 every morning, so I needed to get out of that when I could.
Then one morning I'm in the bar, and I hear a couple of guys in the next booth talking about how there's this big shortage of Civil Engineers, and I'm thinkin' like Why not !? How tough can it be to build a sewer, or pour concrete for a radio tower, or figure out what's wrong with a bridge ?
So I printed up some business cards with "Civil Engineer" after my name and took out a big ad in some local business magazines. I put a half-page spread in the Yellow Pages, and I bought some radio advertising for my Civil Engineering business, with a cool jazz band and some sexy girl's voice. Then I sat back and waited for the calls to start pouring in from people looking for a Civil Engineer.
How about you ? Would you go to work on the 23rd floor of the office building that I built the foundation for ? Would you drive home over the bridge that I designed ? Or would you want to know first whether the engineers that did all of that knew what they were doing ?
Maybe it's a good idea that somebody tests these guys before they're allowed to call themselves "Engineer".
Just like we do with 'Doctors', and 'Lawyers', and 'Plumbers', and 'Dentists', and 'Barbers', and 'Electricians'.
