The main reason was the sinking of the USS Maine. But, the United States also did not want fighting that close to home, and was fearful that the Cuban sugarcane indusrty would suffer.

Because of

1. The US "support" for Cuban Independence (which disappeared as soon as the war was over, leading to the American occupation of Cuba).

2. The sinking of the USS Maine (which, as it turns out, was probably sunk by the Americans themselves (according to an American Major who studied the evidence decades later).

cuba was fighting for independance from Spain, so the US felt it to be their duty to step in and step in and suppert cuba. the sinking of the Maine is the reason US went into war though, even though the Maine sank because of an internal combustion problem and not cus Spain sank it.

The ostensible cause of the Spanish-American War was the destruction of the USS Maine in Havana in 1898. Although most people now suspect it was a boiler explosion, Spanish soldiers were accused of destroying the ship and killing nearly 300 of it's sailors. The U.S. had been edging closer to war over the last few years, egged on by what was known as "Yellow Journalism," (really sensationalist and partisan journalism) and a desire to obtain Naval bases and colonies in the Pacific and elsewhere.
