They first earned the nickname "Trolley Dodgers," later shortened to Dodgers, while at Eastern Park during the 1890s because of the difficulty fans (and players) had in reaching the ballpark due to the number of trolley lines in the area. The name "Trolley Dodgers" is recorded separately in two newspapers on September 3, 1895. The club also engaged in a series of mergers during this period, acquiring the New York Metropolitans in 1888 for territorial protection and star contracts, merging with the Brooklyn Wonders in 1891 as part of the Players League settlement, and merging with the Baltimore Orioles (NL) in 1900 as part of the National League's consolidation of clubs.

Why is Los Angeles's baseball team called the Dodgers?

The team's original home, Brooklyn, had many trolleys on its streets that pedestrians had to dodge. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, the team was known in the late 19th century as the Brooklyn Superbas. Because Brooklyn had so many trolley cars, fans nicknamed the team "the trolley dodgers." The name Dodgers stuck, and the team officially adopted it in 1913. They brought it along with them when they moved to Los Angeles in 1958.

Yes, they were known as the Brooklyn Dodgers when the team was in Brooklyn. They were also known as The Brooklyn Bums or just 'Da Bums. During the period from the '30's through the early 50s, the Dodgers were also refered to as the Robins. In the 19th Century, before they were re-named the Dodgers, they were called the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. The Dodgers were known as the Robins out of respect to their Hall of Fame manager Wilbert Robinson during the 1910s and 1920s.
