The notion that the Earth revolves around the Sun was first proposed in the 3rd century BC by Aristarchus of Samos. (At least he is the one who has gone on record as proposing the heliocentric model)

Hi there you ad a very interesting question and I was very surprised as I had to search a lot for your questiion but at last found it - Galileo actually didn't find that the earth and other planets are revolving around the sun he just proved this thought by his observations research. He used his famous telescope for his observations and by studying the movement of The Earth, The Sun, The Moon,The moons of jupiter, Jupiter and Venus he concluded that the universe is heliocentered or having sun as its center. Also I must tell you that before Galileo many scientists wanted to prove that the universe is heliocentered but couldn't prove due to lack of equipments and also the catholic chuch didn't allow them to go against them and The Bible, the first person to tell the people that the universe is heliocentered was Copernicus and Galileo was a strong supporter of him. At last Galileo did prove that the universe is heliocntered but the catholic church called him and warned him to take back whatever he had said. He was forced to take back whatever he had said but he wrote a book indirectly supporting the theory of heliocetered universe, this time the church took strict action against him and he was put on house arrest due to his age.But for your Information he proved the theory in the year 1616.

Aristarchus is the earliest person from whom we have records making this argument. Aristotle is sometimes mentioned, but Aristotle agreed with the other Greek philosophers that the earth represented the center of the universe.

By the late 19th century it was realized not even our sun was the center of the universe, just the center of our solar system. Einstein and others eventually disabused us of the notion the universe possesses any center.

1. Galileo Galelei discovered that the sun is in the center of the SOLAR SYSTEM, NOT UNIVERSE. HUGE difference. Because of this, he was executed by the church, because the bibles back then stated earth was the center of the solar system.

By the time Nicolaus Copernicus arrived on the astronomy scene, there were sufficiently accurate observations of the stars, and especially of other planets, to give rise to serious concerns about the geocentric model. Most disturbing to the astronomers was the retrograde motion of other planets, or the apparent motion of planets temporarily reversing their direction of travel before returning to their proper orbits.

Such retrograde motions could be explained in a geocentric universe, but only through very complicated models in which the sun and moon orbit around the Earth, but the rest of the planets (and indeed all the stars themselves) then orbit around the sun, which orbits around the Earth. The Ptolemaic System is just such a model, in which planets were embedded on the surface of invisible crystal spheres that revolve around other spheres, which revolve around other spheres, etc., and everything revolves around the Earth. Thyco Brahe, who was an astronomer after Copernicus, simplified the Ptolemaic System, but the steadfastly maintained the Earth at the centre of the universe in what is now known as the Thyconic System.

It is interesting to note that Thyco Brahe maintained support for his Thyconic System out of sound reasoning, good logic, and perhaps some hubris. He postulated that, if the earth did orbit the sun, then its changing orbital location through the seasons must give rise to an apparent motion among the stars (a phenomenon called parallax). Since Brahe had observed no stellar parallax, and since Brahe had ammassed the best and most extensive astronomical catalog of anyone before him, Brahe proclaimed that the Earth had no choice but to be stationary. We know today that stellar parallax does occur, but the stars are so far away, and thus the parallax motion is so tiny, that it could not be observed using the instruments and methods available to Brahe in his time. It had simply never occurred to Brahe that the stars could be so distant.

The mathematics involved in the Ptolemaic System (and later the Thyconic System) was daunting, and describing and predicting the planetary motions was unwieldy. By placing the sun at the centre of the system, Copernicus collapsed the mathematics into a simple set of concentric circles, and predictions of the planetary orbits, including the retrograde motions, became straight forward. Using his model, Copernicus was able to predict, with a high degree of accuracy (for his time) the apparent motion of the planets. He convincingly explained that, unlike in the Ptolemaic mode, the retrograde motion was not an actual reversal of the planetary motion, but it was an illusion. As Earth swung around in its own orbit, Copernicus reasoned, our line of sight to the other planets oscillated on the ecliptic plane, and this oscillation gives rise to an apparent retrograde motion.

The fact that the heliocentric model so simply and accurately explained and predicted the planetary motions was the reason Nicolas Copernicus felt his heliocentric model was correct.

As a footnote, we cannot dismiss Thyco Brahe's contributions. His extraordinary catalog of stellar measurements and other observations, later allowed Johannes Kepler to develop his three laws of orbital dynamics. And it was Kepler's laws that give rise to Sir Isaac newton expressing of the law of universal gravitation, in which everything is attracted to everything else. More importantly, Newton mathematically proved that heavier (more massive) objects excerpt greater gravitational forces than lighter objects do. And it was then that the huge, massive sun came to rest at the centre of our solar system for once and for all. So in a round-about way, Thyco Brahe furnished the raw data that ultimately convinced the world to abandon his model in favor of the Copernican model.

Aristarchus realized that the Earth orbits the Sun. And since the idea that those sparkling spots in the Sky are other galaxies have not even occured to the Greeks, plus the fact that they know other planets orbit the Sun, he just assumed that the Sun is the center of everything.
