FDR was actually elected to 4 terms in office, but died just 3 months into that fourth term. Most Americans know that a President may only serve two terms as president, but prior to 1951 that was due to tradition, or the inability of any president other than FDR to secure a third term. In 1951 the 22nd amendment was ratified. The 22nd Am. established term limits Constitutionally.
Many scholars attribute FDR's ability to secure his third and fourth elections due to WWII which started during FDR's second term.

∙ 14y agoThere were several reasons. He came in and handled the depression, then the war started and people didn't want to change during war. Finally, the 22 nd amendment wasn't passed until after he died so he could stay in office as long as he was elected.
