During that time there were many reasons for Britain to take over Kenya. For example, to get a place to settle the surplus population, to gat raw materials for their companies, to show power to other countries and to locate the source of the River Nile.

In 1886 Germany made an agreement which permitted Britain to take control of the interior of Kenya. In 1887 the Arab sultan of Zanzibar gave Britain control of the coastal areas of Kenya
