England was a Roman Catholic Country. In 1533, King Henry wished to divorce his wife of over 20 years (Katherine of Aragon) because she was over the age of child bearing and of all her many children by him, only one had survived, the Princess Mary. Henry needed a son and by this time had also fallen in love with one of Queen Katherine's Ladies in Waiting, Anne Boleyn, who, being younger than Katherine, he hoped would provided him with the male heir he wanted. He asked the Pope to grant him a 'divorce' (rather an annullment), from Katherine. The Pope refused so Henry broke the English Church away from Rome's jurisdiction, set up the Church IN England (rather than the Church OF England). It remained essentially Catholic during his reign.
