Hitler viewed Eastern Europe as ripe for German domination. The Luftwaffe was unable to defeat the RAF in the summer & autumn of 1940 which left the landwards campaign, having then occupied the Balkans, with only the East to expand into. Russia (The USSR) had huge forces, but was highly inefficient in terms of equipment and control: Hitlers problem of waging war is then exemplified in a total inability to know when & where to stop expanding. Once the advances are (Finally) reversed there really is no Plan B. Nonetheless Plan A was terrible in its devastation.
first answer:
Hitler broke the pact for several reasons, but we may not know 100% sure ever.
second improved answer:
We actually do know for sure why Hitler broke his Non-Aggression Pact with Stalin that was signed in Moscow on 23 August 1939. Based on Hitler's verbal & written words to his Generals & others, uncovered by Historians after the war: We know that Hitler had always intended & planned to attack the Soviet Union after defeating France. The defeat of the Soviet Union was the primary goal that Hitler focused on during the entire war. The Pact was only a temporary measure that protected Hitler's eastern flank during his land, sea & air campaigns against Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, France & Britain. Stalin was fooled into economically & politically supporting Germany from August 24, 1939 to June 22, 1941, because Stalin thought that he could join Hitler in the conquest of Europe, and then the world. If you want to know more I recommend that you read the book: A World at Arms by Gerhard L. Weinberg.
Because Nazi ideology stated that communism was the ideological enemy and because Hitler had just seen the tiny Finnish army kick the Red Army's butt in the winter war and since he was really pumped after his conquest of France and Poland he reckoned now would be a good time to get some more Lebensraum
