Hitler was certainly not the only person to blame. He had quite a number who willingly followed him and shared his ideals, goals and partook in his murderous actions. He is the one central figure who many remember when they look at what happened but a balanced view will acknowledge the part that many others played such as Himmler, Goebbels, Goering etc.

Prior to the war the depression was in many ways outside of his control as was the situation regarding the reparations for WW1. Dietrich Bonhoeffer while in the US before the war specifically mentioned widespread resentment in Germany against the requirements of the Armistice and particularly the reparations burden.

Hitler took advantage of this and other factors to build his image as a German Nationalist and eventually seize power. But he was not alone and could never have achieved all he did alone.

For the economic problems, Hitler made service in the army mandatory, so lots of previously unemployed people were no longer unemployed. He also expanded some larger firms. He tried to make Germany a self-sufficient country, meaning there was little imported. This helped boost the economy after the inflation, and the drastic reparation due to WWI.

How did Hitler maintain power?

He got into power by telling the German people what they wanted to hear (their problems weren't their fault; the Jews did it to them, and their ancestors weakened the race by interbreeding with inferiors). Once he had it, he kept it by playing on their fears, playing up their hopes, and getting everyone to inform on each other. And lies... lies... lies.
