Why did Japan join the war at the same time when Germany was attacking countries in Europe?

Germany and Japan had a pact as allies prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. People tend to forget that while Germany was taking over Europe, Japan had been carrying out its own war througout Asia at the same time. The basic idea was that Germany would take control of Europe and the West, while Japan would take control of Asia. The main reason for Japan's attack on the U.S. was to stop the U.S. from causing Japan problems in Asia.

∙ 6y agoBoth Italy and Japan saw Germany as a powerful ally. Italy wanted to grab whatever it could. Japan was opportunistic in that they wanted to control the Pacific and believed that they had a much better chance while the U.S. and other allies were focused on Germany. Their ideologies were similar, with the Nazis (National Socialists) of Germany and Austria being racist and having a firm belief that the Aryan race was far superior to all others, and the Japanese believing that the purity of their ancestry would give them the ability to deliver a war that the impure citizens of the Allied nations would not be able to endure.
