There are a couple of reasons: The Jews of that time wanted a physical King to rescue them from the Romans. So Jesus didn't fit their preconceived idea and was rejected. You can see this attitude in the disciples of Jesus. If you remember when He was ascending to heaven, one of the disciples asked him, "Are you going to bring back your kingdom now". You can see this attitude all through his ministry if you read the Gospels. The second reason is that the Jews had added so many rules to the law it was like a noose around their necks. There were around 600 laws now to keep instead of just what God had given in the original law. The leaders were so interested in observing every little law that they missed the whole point of serving God. The leaders had an "us and them" mentality. They felt they were the only righteous ones, and the common people were not even in their class. It would be like if a pastor of a church had this attitude of "I am the only one in this church that is following God". How long would that church last? not very. Besides all this, Jesus was claiming to be God. You can see that when the wise men came to Herod to find Jesus that the scribes knew the scriptures. But they had hardened their hearts to God so much they didn't want anyone to upset their ideas. These are all good lessons for us. We can get our own ideas about God and ignore what The Bible is saying, and twist the scriptures to our own choosing. Many people have. I come across them a lot as a chaplain, they have made their own religion that suits them. The leaders of Jesus' day had done this too. See link "Jesus and the Jewish Resistance" on left
