Joseph Smith translated the gold plates by the gift of God. He needed God to help him translate because he was translating from a lost language that no longer exists and because what he was translating is scripture - the word of God.

Joseph Smith also had a scribe to assist him. The scribe did not help with the actual translation, he just wrote as Joseph Smith translated out loud, in order to save time. The scribes also served as valuable witnesses to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon and the existence of the gold plates.

What else was with the gold plates found by Joseph smith?

With the gold plates were the Urim and Thummim and a breastplate to attach them to. Some also list the Sword of Laban, although the sword is not mentioned in the official account, it is sometimes implied from Doctrine and Covenants 17:1. Additional items have been added, such as the Liahona and several balls of gold, as well as the supplies used for creating the plates - but these are usually considered folklore as they are never mentioned in official accounts. Joseph Smith History verses 34-35 says "He (Moroni) said there was a book deposited, written on gold plates... Also, that there were two stones in silver bows - and these stones, fastened to a breastplate, constituted what is called the Urim and Thummim." Verse 52 describes the first time Joseph saw the plates, "I looked in, and there indeed did I behold the plates, and the Urim and Thummim, and the breastplate, as stated by the messenger."

Where did Joseph smith find the plates?

Joseph Smith was lead to the hill near his home by the angel Moroni, who showed him where the plates were buried. The hill did not have a name at the time. Mormons call the hill Cumorah, because the Book of Mormon says that the plates were buried by Moroni in the hill Cumorah. Non-Mormons often call the hill "Mormon Hill" or "Gold Bible Hill".

Did a type of lizard tell Joseph smith the location of the golden tablets?

Um... no, that's probably the weirdest rumor about the LDS church I've ever heard. An angel named Moroni, the prophet who hid the gold plates before he died, told Joseph Smith where they were. There is the case of the "Salamander letters", created by con man Mark Hoffman, which letters were allegedly written by Joseph Smith and purported to identify that Moroni had come in the form of a salamander to visit Joseph Smith. However, the Salamander letters were later proven to be forged.

Which American religious leader said he was led by an angel to find the Book of Mormon engraved on golden tablets?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) believe that an angel named Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, Jr when he was in his late teens and showed him in vision the place where the plates were buried. He went to this place for several years on the same day to receive direction from the angel before he was allowed to take them home to begin translation. In all, four men, including Joseph, touched and handled the plates, with an additional eight seeing them but not holding them. Others saw or carried the plates while they were covered with a cloth, as they were not to be exposed to anyone's veiw without express permission from God. The plates are described by those who saw or held them as being gold in color, held together by three D-shaped rings, weighing about 40 to 60 pounds, six to seven inches wide by about eight inches long and four to six inches thick, with each piece being about as thick as parchment or thick paper (like cardstock). About 2/3 of the pages were sealed up so that they could not be opened. There were very small engravings covering both sides of each page that were meant to be read from right to left. These plates were translated by the power of God into the Book of Mormon, which is considered by members of the Church as being equally as sacred as the Bible.

What is the religious origin of Mormonism?

A:The founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith, claimed that on 21st September 1823, he received 3 visits from the angel Moroni, who told him he would be a most significant person, that a book written on gold plates will be obtained and translated and that a priesthood will be revealed to him. Mormons believe that he was given a set of gold plates on which was written the history of a tribe of Jews that set sail for the Americas in biblical times. Smith translated the plates into English in a King James Version biblical style and produced the Book of Mormon as a record of what was written on the plates. The church Smith founded was named 'The Church of Christ' in 1830. Soon after, it was loosely called the Church of Latter Day Saints. It was renamed Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1838.The nineteenth century was a time of intense speculation about the imminent Judgement Day. Joseph Smith, held out the promise that the return of Christ would be within the first generation of believers.

What two religions have scripture from Gold Tablets delivered by an angel?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believes that the Book of Mormon was written on golden colored (although not necessarily the metal gold) plates, delivered to the prophet Joseph Smith by the Angel Moroni. Joseph Smith then translated the plates by the power of God and published the writings as The Book of Mormon. Mormons use the Book of Mormon side-by-side with the Bible. Other religious groups which have broken off from the Mormon Church, such as the Community of Christ and the Apostolic United Brethren also use the Book of Mormon as scripture.
