People who were contemporaries of Leonardo left records that they saw him write and paint left handed. He also made sketches showing his own left hand at work. Being a lefty was highly unusual in Leonardo's time. Because people were superstitious, children who naturally started using their left hands to write and draw were forced to use their right hands. No one knows the true reason Leonardo used mirror writing, though several possibilities have been suggested:

* He was trying to make it harder for people to read his notes and steal his ideas.

* He was hiding his scientific ideas from the powerful Roman Catholic Church, whose teachings sometimes disagreed with what Leonardo observed.

* Writing left handed from left to right was messy because the ink just put down would smear as his hand moved across it. Leonardo chose to write in reverse because it prevented smudging.

There are two theories, since he never personally explained why.

Firstly, this is called mirror writing. It makes it hard for other people to read the notes. Bear in mind Leonardo also invented his own shorthand which, for a long while, only he understood. This was to hide his writings so others couldn't copy him and because his writings often infuriated the outdated Roman Catholic church.

The second theory is that he was dyslexic. It is not uncommon for some dyslexics to write backwards. There have been many famous dyslexic people that have accomplished so much, one example being Einstein. So it is possible Leonardo was also dyslexic.

The truth may never be known.

Leonardo da vinci did not write using a mirror.

Leonardo was left-handed, so he wrote from right to left, which is called "mirror writing", meaning that other people needed a mirror in order to read what Leonardo wrote. Leonardo da Vinci wrote most of his notebooks using "mirror writing".

There are three possible reasons why Leonardo da Vinci used mirror writing:

1) Leonardo was left handed. When a left handed person writes left to right, it smears the writing, especially if, as in the days when Leonardo was alive, the ink is wet.

2) He wrote backwards because he wanted to protect his work. He didn't want other people stealing his work.

3) He disagreed with some of the teachings of the Roman Catholic church so he was trying to keep them from reading his work.

In my opinion, it was his way of preventing others from duplicating his work & taking credit for his work. There are plenty of books on the subject.

Possibly because he was left handed, writing mirrored meant that the ink wouldn't smudge as if he wrote normally his arm would go across the page.
