The people of Mecca did not approve of the religion of Islam. So for Muhammad and his followers not to get killed for not practicing Mecca's current religion, he fled from Mecca to Medina, and made the hegira. As soon as he convinced the people of Medina to follow Islam, he returned to Mecca with his followers and conquered Mecca. Present Muslims make a pilgrimage to Mecca, otherwise known as the hajj, to represent Muhammad returning to Mecca.

The reason why the Prophet of Islam fled to Medina in 622 AD was because He was commanded by God to do so. Persecution of Muslims had intensified and the people of Mecca refused to tolerate Muhammad and his followers. God commanded them to go elsewhere to a place that they could establish Islam and most importantly, worship freely, without fear of persecution. This is not dissimilar to many other religious groups that escaped religious intolerance for religious freedom, namely, some of the first pilgrims to America.

Muslims believe that God chose Medina as the land to migrate to and the prophet saw the place in his dreams. Medina was also a place where the people were willing to welcome the leader of Islam and his followers and strike an agreement with them. Many other places refused to even allow Muslims to step into their boundaries.

He migrated to Medina when commanded by God to do so because of the planning of the Pagans in Makkah (Mecca) to assassinate him and because of the suffering of his followers from the torture and oppression of those Pagans.

They didn't travel on their choice. They were commanded by Allah (God in English) to travel to Medina especially when Mecca unbelieving leaders planned to assassinate the prophet (PBUH) as God told the prophet.

Muhammad and his followers fled from Mecca to Medina under the threat of violence. Muhammad's preachings had stirred up antagonism in Mecca and several of his followers had already been beaten in the streets for the views concerning the destruction of idols. Muhammad decided to leave when (1) he heard that there was an assassination plan against him in the works and (2) he received a message from the Angel Gabriel telling him to flee.

Because the Meccans did not want to believe in the religion that Muhammad was preaching to them and they started throwing items at him and his followers.

Muhammad fled to Medina because he believed that the Meccans intended to assassinate him (primarily because Muhammad advocated destroying their sacred objects).
