Muhammad went to Medina after preaching in Mecca for 10 years without success. The tribal and nomadic lifestyle lived by the people of Arabia at the time would not allow the Meccas to change their lifestyle (based of heroism and tradition) to a monotheistic state of living which history has shown needs the support of a state. Muhammad went to Medina with 70 people of very low status (the kind Jesus associated with, mainly sinner and prostitutes) and established a community by striking a deal with the leaders there. Muhammad established himself not only as a religious leader but also as a political one. He did two impossible things at once by changed the political structure of Arabia and simultaneously integrating a monotheistic belief in "the one God" of Israel.

It marks the initiation of the first Islam State. They were attacked by the unbelievers and Pagans many times. However, by the strong faith in Islam and the prophet, God supported Muslims and helped them to defeat their enemies and to spread Islam over the all areas of the Middle East.

Because at that time, the Muslims were being persecuted in Makkah. The Prophet had gone to Ta'if to seek refuge there, but they turned him away and threw rocks and him. The people of Madinah agreed to feed and clothe the Muslims, and let them have a share of everything they had. So, the Muslims secretly moved to Madinah, were they were able to practice their Islam fearlessly.

The significance of the journey of prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah (or Mecca) to Yethrib (that was named later as Medina or AlMadinah) in year 622 AD is primarily due to the following:

  • Convert to Islam in Medina was very common and Islam spread very fast there.
  • It was the declation of the first Islam state
  • Prophet Muhammad received so much support from the People of Medina when Muslims in Medina were attacked many times by the pagans of Makkah (or Mecca) and other tribes in the peninsula.
  • It marked out the declaration of many Islam teachings (as Prayers, fasting, banning alcohol drinking and gambling, ...) and morals.
