1 - Prestige: Mussolini saw the international achievements of Hitler and felt that Italy was falling behind 2 - Imperial Ambition: by controlling Albania, Greece (hopefully) and Abyssinia Mussolini wanted to make Italy into a Mediterranean power again as she had been on Roman times. His ambition included taking Egypt from the British.
Militarily the invasion of Abyssinia made no sense at all.
