As most know the real life Pocahontas was named Matoka at birth. What most don't know is that her mother who was also named Pocahontas died when giving birth to Pocahontas. It is said by the oral history of the Indians in question that people called her Pocahontas even before the coming of age ceremony when she was about 10. These factors lead her to choose the name Pocahontas.
