Portugal benefited from joining the EU in the same way that all the other countries did. They were able to
-share in the benefits of the 4 Freedoms (free movement of goods, services, labor, and capital)
-be safe from war with other European countries
-consider joining the EuroZone/adopting the euro as their currency, which has many benefits like
-being part of a strong and stable international currency union with high investor and consumer confidence
-having ensured protection by larger and more successful countries
Anyway, those were the benefits that they took advantage of in 1986. Now, because the euro is much less stable and holds less confidence, there are not as many benefits. So, in fact, joining the EU and subsequently, the EuroZone, was not nearly as profitable as Portugal may have originally calculated.
Portugal's involvement is that it is a member of the European Union, with the same involvement as the other 27 countries that are members. It is also one of the 19 of the European Union members, that use the Euro.
