His stepson, Lloyd Osbourne, once drew a map of a fictional island. Finding the map creative and inspirational, Stevenson wrote the first chapter of The Sea Cook -- which was later known as Treasure Island. Each night he would write a new chapter and read it to his family the next day.

Robert Louis Stevenson actually got the idea of writing this pirate themed book from his twelve-year-old stepson Lloyd Osbourne. The two were playing together and they sketched a map of a treasure island, and that’s how Stevenson got the inspiration to start writing. There is another theory by many Stevenson fans for the key inspiration that he could have used. Stevenson went to California in 1879 to visit his wife Fanny Osbourne. Legends say that he looked upon the beautiful view of Point Lobos and came up with the idea of Treasure Island.
