Reagan had a long-time interest in government. After his career as a leading man began to wane, he became active in the Screen Actors' Guild was elected its president. That led to more political contacts and soon he was a candidate for governor of California. His success at winning two terms plus his name recognition as a movie and TV personality suggested him as a Presidential candidate. Ronald Reagan won a landslide victory over Jimmy Carter in 1980. This was due to his firm stance on national defense during the Iran hostage crisis, his ideas of less government control over personal lives, states rights, lowering taxes in order to boost the economy, and reinstating the gold standard.
