Rudyard Kipling speculated that his treatment at the hands of Mrs. Sarah Holloway who boarded children of British Nationals living in India may have instilled within him the desire to write. Her bullying technique of â??gathering truthâ?? from a child of 7 or 8 necessitated him learning to remember and refine his lies so as not to seek further antagonism.

As is the case with so many poets from different ages, the 19th-20th century English poet Rudyard Kipling was inspired to write poetry by a love of language and the inner desire to tell stories. At the same time, his overseas experiences inspired him to try to share what he had learned with those who hadn't traveled outside of their home-land. In addition, he seemed to feel a strong need to make poetic sense of the strengths and weaknesses of the British Empire.
