The king and queen of Spain had recently won an important war with the Moors. They felt it was time to explore new avenues of trade with the rest of the world. When Columbus came to them with his new idea, they decided to give it a try.
Spain wanted to overtake Portugal(their arch-rival) in using the riches of Asia.
They saw the benefits of exploration. It was hard to find a volunteer as many men thought that it was dangerous and once they left, they would never come home again.
However, if columbus was successful, he could bring spices, slaves, riches back.
