The Woodstock promoters contacted John Lennon about The Beatles performing. Lennon was agreeable but the rest of the band wasn't. Lennon offered the Plastic Ono Band as a replacement but the promoters said no. The Doors at first agreed and then cancelled. The cited explanation was that Jim Morrison did not like performing in outdoor environments.

AnswerIt is also said that Jim Morrison was in a paranoid state and he was fearful of someone taking a shot at him. Answer

The Doors didn't play at Woodstock because at the time, Jim Morrison was in a trial for getting undressed on stage during a concert while he was probably drunk and high.

It was by invitation only & The Rolling Stones were not invited to attend. According to "Woodstock: an encyclopedia of the music and art fair" (pp145-6) the Rolling Stones weren't invited for two main reasons: One, the high performance fee they were getting was more than the Woodstock organizers wanted to pay. Two, the Stones' big hit at the time they were under consideration was "Street Fightin Man" and there was concern that their material might damage the "peace, love & understanding" nature of the concert. The following groups were invited but canceled: Jeff Beck Group (the band broke up in July, forcing cancellation) Iron Butterfly (stuck at the airport, their manager demanded helicopters and special arrangements just for them. Were wired back and told, as impolitely as Western Union would allow, "to get lost", but in other words.) Joni Mitchell (Joni's agent put her on "The Dick Cavett Show" instead) Lighthouse (feared that it would be a "bad scene".) Ethan Brown (arrested for LSD three days before the event.) The following groups declined to attend: The Beatles (John Lennon said he couldn't get them together) Led Zeppelin (got a higher paying gig elsewhere) Bob Dylan (turned it down because of his disgust with the hippies hanging around his house) The Byrds (turned it down because of a melee during their performance at the first Atlanta International Pop Festival, held at the Atlanta International Raceway on July 4 and July 5, 1969) Tommy James & the Shondells (turned it down because they were misinformed about the size and scope of the event) Jethro Tull (turned it down because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal)

The Moody Blues (unknown reasons) Mind Garage (declined because they thought it wouldn't be a big deal and had a higher paying gig elsewhere)

The Doors could not play at Woodstock (1969) because drummer John Densmore, who also was a race car driver, had a race a week before and was injured in 4 car wreck. Densmore's right arm was mangled in the accident but was miraculously healed by Dr. Hubert J. Farnsworth and Densmore was able to join the band after only missing a month due to his injury.
