because it was when the british were taking the colonists freedoms
Thomas Paine means that the patriots are going through a difficult time, and it is at the point of war where souls are being lost, meaning they are dying.

That is not a quote by Molly Pitcher; Thomas Paine said that.
Many think molly pitcher said "These are the times that try mens' souls." but its not that was Tomas paine.
Based on my reading, I would say that Thomas Paine's influence was more to the people than the government. The losses of the Continental Army and the effect of the English habitation and propaganda were crushing what remained of our independent spirit. Common Sense gave people, especially the soldier, something to hold on to, and gave them will to continue. Those were the times that tried mens souls, without a doubt. I believe the people then had a better sense of what they wanted from government. Remember, we did not have a Constitution yet. Hope this helps.

Thomas Paine wrote those words in a pamphlet called The Crisis. Paine wrote several pamphlets with that title, but these words were in the first one. The reason was that during the winter George Washington spent at Valley Forge, his troops and the colonists at large began to weary of the war and many wanted to stop it. He mainly wrote it for the troops though, many of whom were on the verge of deserting, leaving the army as their enlistments ran out or just plain mutineering. Paine's work convinced many soldiers and civilians to keep on fighting instead of giving up even though the times were so hard that they did try mens' souls.

it was that she was born in Trenton, New Jersey and she helped her husband fight in the war and she got the name Molly Pitcher because she helped give people pitchers of water . She never made a speech.
"these are the times that try mens souls" This is a quote made by Thomas Jefferson in the United States Constitution. He was testing the nation with the power of Democracy to see if the United States would still have potentiall in that of the Democratic Party. I should know. I learned it today in my 8th grade history class
The American Revolution was a time that truly tried men's souls. This was due to the harsh conditions that the colonial army and militias faced. They also faced overwhelming British troops, and were seriously outnumbered at every turn. Still, the colonials pressed on until they achieved independence for themselves and their fellow countrymen.
