Hawaii was not bought by the United States. Like most the United States you could consider the land stolen. Mainly thanks to the Dole fruit company and other businesses who wanted Hawaii for its climate and ability to grow exotic foods.

because they are getting good land for growing sugar and naval base for their naval ships.

Answer

Why not? Who knows why, in history, countries settle where they do. Look at england with settlements in the Carribbean and as far south as Australia. Hawai`i certainly is closer to the US mainland than Puerto Rico (also a US territory).

It may be a technicality, but the US Government did not take or overthrow the legitimate government of Hawaii. US business men were fully responsible for that action and they did wrongfully receive aid from the Navy and Marines in the name of public safety, it was not an act of government policy. If President Grover Cleveland had not been replaced at that critical moment in history by the pro business William McKinley it is possible that the Monarchy might have been restored and the coupe d'etat reversed.

During the days of coal fired stream ships, Hawaii was used as a refueling port on trips to and from Asia.

It also had military importance as a base and refueling point for our coal burning Navy.

Also, off this topic, the reason why the United States joined World War II was because Japan bombed US Navy in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
