I don't think he especially wanted to be President. I think he mostly did not want to refuse his supporters when he unexpected got the Republican nomination. Of course, he knew that there are rewards to being president and his wife wanted to see him advance. He seemed to take the job on his own terms. He campaigned from his front porch so the campaign was not very taxing on his mind or body and once he became President he did not let the job interfere with his Golf game or his Poker sessions.
