John Lennon considered New York to be where it was all happening at the time, the cultural centre of the world. He said in 1971, "If I lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in Rome. Where else? Today America is the Roman Empire and New York is Rome itself."

John Lennon and Yoko Ono left England for New York on the 31st of August, 1971, partly because Ono was in a custody battle with her previous husband (Anthony Cox) over their daughter Kyoko, and staying in the US made it easier to pursue custody, and partly because they were tired of the way they had been treated as a couple in England, Ono in particular. She had spent her teens and twenties in New York, and felt at home there, and so did Lennon once he'd spent some time in the city. (He sold their house, Tittenhurst Park, to fellow former Beatle Ringo Starr.) Ono ultimately won custody, but Cox disappeared with their daughter.

They lived in Greenwich Village on Bank Street at first, then leased an apartment at the Dakota from actor Robert Ryan. They bought the apartment after his death, and went on to purchase a total of seven apartments in the building. (One became their office, one became storage for their wardrobe, another became storage for their extensive video collection.)

Lennon had been granted resident-alien status, but this was revoked during Richard Nixon's re-election campaign in 1972, and deportation proceedings were begun. Ono was offered a "green card" (permanent resident-alien status), but not Lennon, and it took a four-year court battle (with numerous governmental breaches of ethics and laws revealed as the case went on) for Lennon to also be allowed to stay in the US.

Lennon and Ono separated late in 1973; they had been having marital problems. Ono had suggested their personal assistant, May Pang, as a mistress for Lennon, not expecting him to take her and leave, which he did. He and Pang stayed in Los Angeles for almost a year, before moving back to New York. Lennon and Ono reconciled early in 1975, and she became pregnant with their son Sean. (He was born on Lennon's 35th birthday.)

They continued to live together at the Dakota until Lennon's death in 1980, with occasional trips to Japan and other places around the world. (None of the visits were to Britain.) Ono still lives in their same Dakota apartment.

Lennon and Ono separated from the fall of 1973 (as her Feeling the Space and his Mind Games albums were coming out) until early 1975. They were having marital problems, and Ono suggested May Pang (one of their assistants) as a "girlfriend" for Lennon, never expecting him to take off to Los Angeles with her. (The story that Ono threw him out of the house was concocted later, to spare Ono embarrassment.) Lennon and Pang returned to New York in the summer of 1974, and he moved back in with Ono after the Christmas holidays. (She soon became pregnant with Sean.)

Lennon and Ono left the UK on August 31st of 71 for varied reasons. One being to look for Ono's daughter by Tony Cox- Kyoko Chan Cox (changed to Rosemary to make it hard to find her) and because of the hurtful, painful press that the British journalists were giving Yoko and John. The British press called Yoko a monkey, ugly and other painful names in the newspaper. John loved NY because it reminded him so much of Liverpool. Yoko moved to NY when she was young and became part of the art scene there so she loved being there as well.
