The republic was established during a rebellion against the last king of Rome who was a tyrant. The romans decided to do away with the monarchy to prevent the return of tyranny. They had two annually elected consuls in charge to prevent power from becoming concentrated in the hands of one man. The Romans also swore that they would not allow anyone to try to become a king ever again. In the early days one man was executed and another one was forced to commit suicide because they were accused of trying to become a king.
