Ford was not nominated for VP. He was appointed by Nixon and took office when Nixon resigned in disgrace. Many people thought Nixon should be indicted and serve time in prison, but Ford pardoned him from all charges. I think people felt the Republicans should pay for their disgrace by losing the White House and so voted for Carter.

2 things. 1 - he pardoned nixon. 2 - he made a bad mistake in the 2nd debate w. carter that Poland was totally free and Russia had no intervention.
