Answer They were all relatively cheap forms of entertainment,
The 1930s were the "Golden Age" of Hollywood! While the country was struggling its way back up from The Great Depression, Hollywood was making movies the country could escape …into... if only for an hour or so. The standard films were "talkies" with new faces and more vibrant characters, as silent films started fading out in the 1920s. If you think of a famous black and white film, it was probably from that time period. Technicolor was introduced in 1932, so the movies with the bigger budgets were able to be in color. Musicals were big. Vaudeville actors and actresses found their way to screen. Movies often came with shorts before the movie such as the "Baby Burlesques" that Shirley Temple appeared in before she was famous. Here are some of the ultra famous films: Gone With the Wind, Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (the first feature-length animated film) and The Grapes of Wrath. Some films that were popular then but aren't as known now: Hell's Angels, Stagecoach, Tarzan the Ape Man, Boys Town and Captains Courageous. Look for films from little Shirley Temple, W.C. Fields, Bob Hope, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Errol Flynn, and my all time favourite: The Marx Brothers!
The first radio station was broadcasted in 1920 and became ever so popular after that increasing from one station in 1920 to over 600 in 1922.

The 1930s was a golden age for radio. By the end of the decade, 28 million Americans had one in their home. ÔOur Gal SundayÕ was a popular show during this time.
It became so popular because during the 1920s and so on, and during the Great Depression and World War 1 and such, it was usefull for a new standard in communication with your… friends or communication in war but it was also sparked in regular citizens in the U.s and manyother places for leisure. Cause in that time, the radio didnt only broadcast news and music, but dramas, sitcoms, and music programs.

I know that in the depression they couldn't afford movies so they turned to radio. The first radios were expensive but at the end of a hard working day everyone looked forward… to being entertained by the radio which after buying it, was Free.
