Dentists can place crowns on wisdom teeth (3rd molars). It all depends on whether it is appropriate to do so.

Often, wisdom teeth are relatively unimportant to the function of the patient's mouth, and therefore it would be a waste of time, money and effort to restore them with a crown or filling. On the other hand, sometimes wisdom teeth can be important, especially if they are in occlusion and the patient is missing 1st or 2nd molars.

If you have doubts about your dentist's recommendations, seek another opinion from an oral surgeon or prostodontist (crown & bridge specialist).

Very likely, inside the tooth there was decay. This needs to be completely and thoroughly removed and cleaned out; -- and then filled in. Often you are given a temporary crown for a week or two, until your officially prepared crown comes back.

Caps, or crowns, are placed to protect teeth that have been weakened by decay, cracks, large restorations, or root canal therapy. Caps may also be placed to correct esthetic problems or to rebuild teeth that have been excessively worn down.

There is something wrong with the tooth. Either there is a fracture or decay or excessive wear. The damage is too extensive for a filling.
