Why did Oliver Cromwell become unpopular?
He became unpopular with the Irish because of the siege of drogheda and wexford. He massacred them forcing children to go to the west indies where they will all die. The royal…ists who supported the king don't like him because he beheaded the king. Although he wanted a democratic society his ways were often bloody and brutal. Also he banned many things like Christmas, make up, work on Sundays, swearing. Oliver Cromwell was unpopular because in a country of some 98% Anglicans he forbad Worshipping at Anglican Altars. He was instrumental in murdering King Charles, who refused to sign away the Church,[30/1/49.] He was also responsible for plundering the ancient Anglican Church and sending its priests to jail and as slaves to the West Indies whilst keeping Anglican Bishops in prison for some 19/20 yrs. Our priests were ejected from their livings along with their families, simply turned out of doors with no means , in many cases of sustenance. He was cruel in many cases slaughtering the Romanist Garrison at basing House as well as letting his men murder Welsh Episcopalians after Naseby. He taxed the poor to pay for his wars and his army and spent the time in an effort to aggrandise the English Protestants at the expense of Scotland, Wales and his own family! (MORE)

yes, he did. he and parlimeant made a pertishon and everyone who wanted the kings head off, had to sign it. so then they cutted off the kings head, chrles the first, and there… was no ruler. who would rule the contry because the king is dead, and the army said they would rule the contry but Parliament said they will do it. and there was one person beetween those two, oliver cromwell, and he had a tittle of lord protechtor. then later after he died, and his son was sposed to take charge but instaed they decided to bring back the son of Charles the first and make him kind instead. i hope my knowledge helps u :) (MORE)

Oliver Cromwell was an Englishman and a member of Parliament. When King Charles I changed the official religion of England from Protestant to Roman Catholic, Cromwell led a re…volt against the King. The Protestant forces won and King Charles was hanged. Cromwell then became president of England and England became officially Protestant again. During Cromwell's time the government made a number of reforms. Shortly after Cromwell died, England decided to become a monarchy again. Charles II, the son of Charles I, announced that he was a Protestant and returned from France to claim the throne. (He was willing to attend a protestant church once to have the crown put on his head. Since he attended church inside his castle, no one really knew what he really was. Everyone suspected he was a Roman Catholic.) Some of the reforms made under Cromwell remained and some were repealed. An Englishman! Oliver Cromwell was a opportunist. When he went bankrupt through maladministration of his estate, he lived off tithes stolen from the Anglican Church and contributed to by his neighbours, He became a soldier and was an exceptional junior officer, even rising to the rank of general. Whilst he saw great success he is chiefly noted for the massacre of Roman Catholics Unfortunately, he was free with other people's lives and had a streak of cruelty especially with the opposition's lives! This he shared with his religious friends and supporters , the Calvinists. Cromwell being responsible for the murder of Welsh Speaking women, [Anglicans,] who were murdered after Naseby. He was responsible for the massacre at Basing House, 1645, for the Romanist garrison. Later as a General in Ireland, again the Romanists suffered, both Irish and English, in a series of massacres designed to reduce the will to fight of his opponents. (MORE)
