You maybe now have a chance to ask them. If you are a good friend to them maybe they will feel that and then be able to tell you.
It's impossible to know why someone tries to do this. People feel despair for all sorts of reasons. They may feel alone, or rejected. They may think they have a secret that nobody else can understand. Or that they can't talk to anyone else about. They may not realize the love and affection that others have for them.
You can help by being a good friend to other people. But in the end it might still happen. People die every day, from sickness, or accident, or old age, or by a deliberate action. That's life!
