The spirit of capitalism suggests that if there is a need or desire (demand), then someone will be willing to satisfy that need or desire (supply). It doesn't matter whether it's sanctioned by the state or not. Simply because the U.S. Constitution banned the sale of alchohol didn't mean that a large segment of the U.S. population wouldn't still desire it. Therefore, individuals who didn't respect the nations laws decided that they would supply that demand and that demand was HUGE!!! Of course they felt that they could increase their profits and power as well as insulate themselves more from the scrutiny of law enforcement if the organized themselves. This organization payed large dividends and may many people wealthy. However, when Prohibition was repealed, then corporations took over and swallowed up the Mob. Therefore the Mob had go to other rackets.
