The Celts celebrated the Festival of Samhain. Ancient Celtics believed that this was the time when the division between living and dead was blurred, and the dead could wander as they wished. They put out food offerings to make the spirits happy, and wore masks out in the hopes of making the spirits think they were already dead.

Halloween is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals, and European folk traditions that came together over time to create the holiday of Halloween. It has been thought that Halloween is the day the dead can return to the Earth. Halloween soon lost its religious meaning and is now just a celebration for fun.

Halloween came to us from the ancient Celts. They believed that the worlds between the living and dead became thin and the dead could cross over. They built big bonfires of special woods and would jump through the flames to protect themselves. They also rang bells as a means of protection. When the Irish came to the American colonies they brought the holiday with them and the stories. Jack of the Lantern was one of the stories. Jack was a bad boy who did mean things and the devil consigned him to wonder the earth and to carry a turnip with a lump of coal inside. Thus, we have Jack O' Lanterns and because there were no turnips in the colonies they began to use pumpkins instead. It wasn't until the late 1940's and early 50's that the Halloween we know came about. Up until that time children didn't do trick or treating, but adults partied. Tricks were often done by the young people, but not going house to house for candy.
