People went on crusades because there was a beautiful dome-called the dome of the rock, it was built on the rock where Mohamed was said to of sat and prayed and it was so holy that no Muslim was allowed to tread on this rock, also touch the rock, look at this rock or even breath on it, as it was so holy when visiting the dome. Therefore the Christians fought to get Jerusalem back while the Muslims fought to keep Jerusalem. These wars were said to last sometimes nearly 200 years. The middle ages were harsh for these religious people who went on crusades.
People went on crusades because they were there as a punishment or been paid by someone who had a punishement. They also went because they receive gold, silver and life stock to take home to their families. They sometimes went for Jesus, to a place were he was hung on the cross and buried and they would fight for him because he died for them.
There are a whole variety of reasons and Jonathan Phillips puts this very well that for all intents and purposes there were probably as many reasons for going on crusade as there were crusaders.
On the first crusade, the primary motivation seems to be religion. Most of the charters suggest that people were going because they believed it would save their souls and they would gain entry to heaven with a sinless record. There's been an argument raised that landless younger sons went so as to acquire wealth but this is dismissed by most historians in this field today and is considered somewhat outdated; if you want to read more on this topic I advise looking into books by...
Jonathan Riley-Smith,
Jonathan Phillips,
Thomas Asbridge
and there are a few others - Jotischky is worth a look but I find him a tad dry usually.
Hope this helped!

The Crusades. There were many Crusades, but the main aim was to rid the Holy Land of Turks, who the Emperor of Constantinople did not like. The Pope was looking for a reason to create a super-power, and then the Emperor sent him a letter complaining about the Turks, so the Pope decided to take advantage of the opportunity. So many people decided to go because the Pope promised that if they went, they would definitely have a place in Heaven. He said that it is not a crime to kill people, if they are not fellow Christians. This is why many people went, and gave up jobs.
Not much random people from all over Europe joined the crusades but Venetians did sack Constantinople in the 4th crusade.

People were persuaded to go to the Crusades through the use of religion and rewards in the after-life. It was believed that a warrior in the Crusades would be greatly rewarded in his afterlife. Participation in the Crusades became a badge of honor.

People were willing to go on Crusades because they believed that it was a duty they must fulfill in order to gain admittance into heaven in the afterlife.
WHY DID PEOPLE SUPPORT THE CRUSADES?
A fact about the crusades is that people went on the crusades because Pope Urban told them that they would be forgiven for their sins and tht they would automatically go to Heaven.

It was a famous quote from Pope Urban II's speech to go off to fight in the Crusades. He said "Deus vult!", meaning "God wills it!", referring to the Crusades.
The Crusades were a series of military battles that WERE people fighting people.
Many people who fought in the crusades did so to repent sins and be forgiven by the church or to gain land. Or because they wanted to leave their village because it was under attack.
