∙ 9y agoSome pilgrims would have gone to visit Saint Becket's shrine because they thought touching cloth that contained his blood could cure them of their ailments. Going to Canterbury is also a religious pilgrimage because the tomb of Saint Becket is there.

He was an Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and as such a holy man who put God first in his life. King Henry wanted Thomas to put the king first not God. Thomas Becket would not do that. Thomas was kneeling in prayer, worshiping God, when he was murdered. We go on pilgrimage here to pray for the courage to do do what is right in the sight of God (not man). We hope that St. Thomas Becket will ask God to give us the Grace to endure suffering for the good of God's Kingdom. Since Thomas lived a life of virtue and goodness AND persevered unto the end of his life: he is in the presence of God, which of course is Heaven. God is faithful to those who are faithful to Him and will grant the wishes of those in His presences.

In Medieval times it was the ambition of every Christian to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem as it was for every Muslim to go to Mecca. Only the extremely rich could afford to do so and it was a very arduous and perilous journey.
After Thomas A'Becket was murdered the King maintained that he had not ordered it but merely spoke angrily and in haste and that others had taken his words and acted on them.
In order to publicly demonstrate his regret to the people and to the church in Rome he made a pilgrimage to Canterbury to honor the murdered Archbishop.
For the middle classes this became their substitute for the unattainable trip to Jerusalem. From London to Canterbury is a pleasant seven day stroll through the Garden of England, staying at a tavern every night IT was the popular package holiday of the time.

I would not say that it is popular, but it is in a beautiful setting, and is very large, the majority of our wonderful countries cathedrals, are visited by many tourists and locals alike, just because, they are tremendous, and it is hard to believe that they were built without all the technology we have today. Having visited many, I have no real favourites.
