Why did people in the south hate blacks?

Whenever one group of people consider themselves to be 'above' or 'superior' to another, it is an unfortunate aspect of our humanity that we will treat the 'lesser; group badly. This can be demonstrated in everyones office building, Do the executives know all the janitorail staff on a first name basis? Do you? Regardless of race - change is often hard for people to accept and often the first emotion to surface is hostility - as a defense mechanism.

Answer: It wasn't as much hate as good business because they were a cheap labor, but it was still wrong. After slavery was abolished, black people were still used a cheap labor by limiting their educational access and access to higher paying jobs. Whites feared their numbers and loosing power to blacks so many social and political obstacles were established to keep them under the control of whites and laws were enacted to ensure that their opportunities to succeed and gain power were limited.
