Because of his plan with the New Deal. It was a new idea that was mysterious and FDR promised it would help. Many Americans preferred having FDR as president than Hoover, who was disliked by by most of the country at that time.

Most historians, including those who disagreed with Roosevelt's policies, acknowledged that he brought a spirit of hope to a nation discouraged by the Great Depression. His effective use of radio (through the "Fireside Chats" that he gave), and his ability to make Americans feel he understood their situation, made him very popular; his approval ratings were consistently high.

His approval was high due to giving free money away. He also gave government money to the states that voted the way he wanted them to and held back money from the states that didn't.

His public works programs (PWA, WPA, Artists [program) contributed to the US' infrastructure; gave the workers confidence.

These programs were the early form of Welfare, this money went to states that voted mostly Democratic and followed FDR's wants. Examples of these programs are one group would dig a hole another group would fill it.

In dealing with the Great Depression, and its uncontrolled downward spiral, as we now perceive, FDR SAVED CAPITALISM (from its excesses).

History will show where the rest of the world called it a Depression, it became a 'great depression' in the United States mainly due to FDR's policies

While not all of his policies were successful, and while his critics believed he expanded the role of government, FDR turned the economy around, provided a safety net for elderly people (social security) and helped put millions of Americans back to work.

The only reason The United States of America got out of the Depression went we did was through WW II and the Businesses building Military equipment. FDR's Administration piled up so much debt American's are still paying the interest on that debt today.
