As Vice-President, according to our Constitution, when President Kennedy was pronounced dead, Johnson automatically became president, and he was sworn in on the same aircraft that Kennedy and his staff flew to Dallas in the previous day. Whatever aircraft the President happens to be on, carries the designation "Air Force One", and there is a famous photograph that shows Jackie Kennedy, still in blood soaked clothing, and Lyndon Johnson, standing beside the casket that contained the remains of JFK, as Johnson was sworn in aboard the jet liner that had carried the Kennedy's and their staff to Dallas, before they even left the Dallas airport. Johnson said he wanted to get sworn in quickly, so as to remove any argument as to who was then President, back in Washington DC.
