They knew where Germany's research efforts were leading them. Also remember at this time Patton was trying to regroup and re-equip the former Germans into units he could train for the drive against the Soviets. Patton had asked the valid question, why did we fight and have so many Americans die to replace one dictator (Hitler) with another (Stalin). The Soviets knew about Patton's remarks and that there were some in the Allies camp who wanted to continue the war. With the dropping of the A bombs, the US displayed a new and fearsome weapon against which the Soviets had no defense.

∙ 12y agoDuring WW2 Germany, Britain, and Russia were all working on atomic weapons.... Its also interesting that had Germany not expelled its Jewish scientists it would have been the first to develop nuclear weapons.... but since amrerica developed them first and demonstrated their power they tipped the balance of powwer between russia and America in favoour of America... it wasnt until 3 years later when russia setonated its nuclear bomb that things became... interesting you could say. However its worth pointing out that the question is sesriously flawed, russias few is not what coused the cold war, it was one small part of hundreds of isssues which russia and America both feard about each other
