James II (Stuart) was the last Catholic King of England, Scotland and Ireland. He was deposed by Prince William of Orange (Dutch and his son in law). William better known as King Billy was invited to take the throne by the majority of the English lords and Parliament as they thought James was too pro Catholic and French.

King Billy is hated by Catholics (Irish in particular) for his treatment during the Civil war that deposed James.

altho king James was raised in the church of England tradition,he was born of a catholic mother and was of the Stewart line who in fact were the rightful heirs to scotlands throne..i guess some English clergy may have feared that one day a catholic from the Stewart dynasty would sit on the English throne and bring back catholic monarchs to protestant England

They didn't. Of course Catholics had to deal with the fact that under James' predecessors Henry VIII and Elisabeth I the so-called Church of England and not the Catholic church had become the dominant religion in England. And many still-Catholic nobles had been forced out of office and into semi-retirement although they were left in full posession of their wealth and estates.

But James started out as being very tolerant to the Catholics and forbade any persecution of them as long as they gave no public offence. There was however a small group of Catholic radicals who were working towards the full restoration of Catholic supremacy over England and who wanted a Catholic successor to Elisabeth rather than Protestant James.

It was this small group that organised the Gunpowder Plot on Parliament. It is one of history's little ironies that they had brought in gunpowder that had been lying in some depot for too long. The old gunpowder, if left to just lie there for some time, tended to dissolve from its explosive mixture into its non-explosive constituent components again. Even if the plot had not been discovered, little or none of the powder would have exploded.
