The entire Mediterranean Sea (and major regions of the Black Sea additionally) came to be regarded as a Roman sea for many reasons. First and foremost was that Rome (as the Greeks before them) were a naval and coastal imperial power. Where there were coasts, there were Roman settlements, and not surprisingly the core of the Empire was along the Mediterranean's shores spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia Minor and North Africa.

Except for stories from Africa and Persia, the other seas of the world were unknown to the Greeks. The Mediterranean was essentially their world, and it was not until the times of the Romans that the Atlantic shores of Europe were explored.

The Greeks were an ancient people who, while well-traveled in their time, did not have the luxury of our technology: the ability to view the entire planet.

The Romans called the Mediterranean our sea because Rome was in the Mediterranean and because they came to control the whole of this sea. All the lands on the shores of the Mediterranean came under the Roman Empire.

First a little correction, "Mare Nostrum" means our sea, not your sea. The Romans called it "our sea" because they controlled all the territories bordering it and all the islands in it.
