The North won the Civil War due to advantages economically(factories that created boundless resources, not solely dependent on crops, strong work force due to higher population density), better military leaders(Grant, Sherman), unity among the people(conflict with states rights in the south after succession), strong leadership on behalf of President Lincoln(creating black troops of freed Negroes), the South's failure in gaining foreign intervention, breakdown of slavery(underground railroad and other resistance movements), which led to the souths economic failure.

The main reason the north entered the civil war was a few things:

1) Fort Sumter was fired upon by the confederates in 1861 and the north responded by sending 70,000 volunteers to stop rebellion which was essentially the start of the war.

2) Slavery was a big issue. North was free, south was deeply reliant on slaves so nation was divided on this issue

3) When Lincoln was elected president, southern states seceded from the union to form the confederacy as lincoln was anti slavery. Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union country so saw it his duty to get them back so the war was started in an effort to keep the country as one

The right of an individual state to secede does not exist. The US had been fired on by the South. Sooner or later slavery had to end.
