Why did the Old Sultan of Johor-riau sultanate pass the throne to Tengku Abdul rahman and not tengku Hussein?

When the old sultan died, only the younger son, Tengku Abdul Rahman was present. The elder son, Tengku Hussein, who would hvae been made the new sultan, was away in Pahang. Therefore, the Bugis chiefs in Riau made Tengku Abdul Rahman, the new Sultan.

Why did Sir Stamford Raffles decide to recognize Tengku Hussein as the Sultan of Singapore?
The sultan then was controlled by the Dutch since the Dutch endorsed him as the Sultan in 1818. Tengku Hussein was the eldest son of the previous Sultan, however he was away at Parang when his father died, thus his brother claimed the position of the Sultan. Though many malay officials who were Tengku Hussein's supports were against this, they couldn't do anything since the Dutch was too powerful for them. When Raffles arrived at Singapore and wanted to establish a port in Singapore, he couldn't ask the Sultan to sign the treaty since he was controlled by the Dutch, and the Dutch obviously wouldn't allow it. Hence, when raffles promised to recognise tengku hussein as the rightful sultan of Johor and Singapre in the condition that Tengku Hussein sign the treaty which allow him to establish a port in Singapore and to colonise Singapore.

On 28 January 1819, British reached the Singapore waters.Raffles heard news from some Orang Laut that the Dutch was not occupying Singapore.On 29 January 1819, Raffles together with Major William Faquhar and some sepoys rowed in a small boat to the mouth of Singapore River.When thwy landed, Raffles and his entourage went to meet the Temenggong at his house.Raffles told Temonggong Abdul Rahman, who was the senior minister of Johor-Riau Sultanate, that the British wanted to establish a trading settlement there.The Temonggong was willing to give him permission but imformed Raffles that the island was ruled by Sultan Abdul Rahman of the Johor-Riau Sultanate.According to him, only the Sultancould give the British permission to establish a settlement there.However, the Sultan was under the control of the Dutch who would not allow the British to occupy Singapore.The Temonggong than explained to Raffles that Sultan Abdul Rahman was made the Sultan of Singapore because his elder brother, Tengku Hussein, who was the rightful heir to the throne was away in Pahang when his father died.Thus, the Bugis chiefs in Riau made the younger son, Tengku Abdul Rahman, the new ruler and this was supported by the Dutch.After listening to the story, Raffles decided to recognise Tengku Hussein as the rightful Sultan and then obtain his permission to start a settlement.The Temonggong then sent his men to one of the Riau islands to invite Tengku Hussein to Singapore.Tengku Hussein left for Singapore secretly to avoid suspicion from the Dutch.When met with Raffles in Singapore, Tengku Hussein agreed to be recognised by the British as Sultan.On 6 February 1819, Sultan Hussein and the Temeggong signed a treaty with the British.The Terms of the Treaty:The British were allowed to build a settlement in the southern part of Singapore island.The Sultan would be paid an allowance of $5, 000 a year.The Temengong would be given $3, 000 a year as allowance.

How did the dutch react to the british claiming Singapore and why?
First, some background information. Singapore then was under the rule of the Johor Sultan, Abdul Rahman. His elder brother, Tengku Hussein did not become the Sultan after their father died because Abdul Rahman was by their father's side at his death and people decided to make him Sultan. Tengku Hussein had no choice but to go and live in Riau. Then Raffles learnt about it and he simply reinstated Tengku Hussein as Sultan and signed a treaty with him to let the British use Singapore. (NOTE: Abdul Rahman is under the influence of the Dutch who were the British's rivals hence Raffles could not ask Abdul Rahman to sign a treaty as the answer is surely a no and the Dutch will go and claim it.) The Dutch were angry that the British had not asked for their consent to claim Singapore. Furthermore, they find it illegitimate and hence threatened to use force to claim Singapore. They also offered to give up their ports in India. (NOTE: They do not have air transport then, so strategic locations really matter for trade. Singapore was located right in the center of the Malay Archipelago and on the China-India tea-opium trade route. Very strategic for trade).
