They invaded in 480 BCE by marching from Asia Minor through Thrace, Macedonia, Thessaly.
They were accompanied by a fleet which kept pace with the ground troops and protected the sea resupply lane.
During the Ionian Revolt of the Greek cities in Asia Minor, they received military assistance from Athens and Eritrea. The Persian privincial capital Sardis was sacked and burnt. King Darius of Persia wanted not only vengeance but also to warn the mainland Greek cities to stop interfering in his empire so he mounted a punitive expedition against the two cities in 490 BCE. It was not an invasion of Greece.
When this expedion ended in failure after defeat at the battle of Marathon, Darius decided that the only way to fix the problem of external interference was to establish an ethnic frontier by bringing mainland Greece within his empire. He died before he could execute this but his successor King Xerxes invaded in 480 BCE to complete the project. He also failed, and sporadic fighting continued until a peace was made in 449 BCE.
The Persians were attempting to bring peninsula Greece within its empire as some of its cities were supporting revolts by the Greek cities within its Asian empire.
They were defeated at sea at Salamis, and the following year on land at Plataia.
As the mainland Greeks persisted in interfering in the Greek cities within the Persian empire, Persia decided to incorporate mainland Greece within its empire to maintain stability.
