Rationale

The Taliban took over Afghanistan because they have a certain set of beliefs about what is right and what is wrong and felt the need to impose their values on the rest of Afghanistan.

Method

Many of the Taliban's fighters come from the Islamic Extremist Mujaheddin who were trained and equipped by Americans in their fight against the Soviets from 1979-1989. Once armed and capable, they united behind a common repressive religious banner and collectively overpowered the warlords who controlled different parts of the country.

After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, the former Soviet-supported Republic of Afghanistan found it difficult to prevent the Mujahideen (Jihadist Afghan rebels) from overthrowing that government in 1991 and establishing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. However, this new government was plagued by a civil war from 1992-1996. In this civil war, a number of recent students (Taliban طالبان means "students" in Arabic) from Islamic madrassas (religious schools) joined together to create the Taliban. The Taliban eventually overpowered all of the other rivals by 1996, when they became the dominant power of the country. From 1996-2001, the remaining Non-Taliban forces were never completely eradicated, but controlled less than 10% of the country.

What do the taliban want?

The Taliban is a specific political Islamist Party/Militant Organization. The Taliban has certain political aims: the control of Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan. The Taliban also were able to hold national control in Afghanistan and ruled it according to some of the most barbaric interpretations of Shari'a Law. As a result, they spread out through national channels such as police and justice departments. The Taliban, consequently, has very limited aims that came in direct contravention of American interests only in 2001 when the United States invaded Afghanistan. The Taliban, while supporting Al-Qaeda, were not (prior to 2001) interested in the latter's goal of attacking and Islamicizing the West. They are still opposed to exerting resources to achieve these goals, but do focus their efforts on removing the Northern Alliance government of Afghanistan and leading that country again.

How did the Taliban Form?

It was formed by the terrorist groups that emerged victorious after the Soviet Occupation of Afghanistan. The reason they were able to do both feats is because of gorrila tactics and US assitence.

How were the Bolsheviks able to seize power from the proviaional government?

The Bolsheviks did not seize power during the Russian Civil War. They had already seized governmental power from the Provisional Government in 1917. The civil war is generally figured to have started in 1918. The Bolsheviks managed to retain their power, not seize it, by winning the civil war.

What caused the US to go to war with Afghanistan?

This was triggered following the terrorist attacks against the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon on 11th September 2001. The government of George W. Bush claimed that it had firm evidence that the then Taliban government of Afghanistan had actively supported the terrorists, with funding, training and logistics support, and was turning their country into a haven for the training, instruction and equipping of Islamic terrorists. A military offensive was begun later the same year to remove the Taliban from power, allegedly to neutralise the terrorist threat that it posed to America. Whilst there was indeed some truth in the claim that the Taliban regime was engaged in supporting terrorism, it was not doing so to anything like the degree that the Bush administration alleged, and was not able to afford to fund large terror campaigns in the way Bush claimed. Many people thus felt that the assault on Aghanistan was mainly a knee-jerk revenge attack against a fundamentalist Islamic country, in revenge for the attacks on New York. The USA went to war with Afghanistan not because we hate Afghanistan. We actually went to war with the Taliban that was (and still is) inside of Afghanistan. Taliban is a political party; USA wants to stop them now before they could possibly become the rulers and completely ruin Afghanistan. The USA is in Afghanistan so we can stabilize Afghanistan.

Why did the United States invade Afghanistan?

The United States went to Afghanistan in 2001 to wage a necessary war of self-defense. On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists attacked our country. They were able to plan and execute such a horrific attack because their Taliban hosts had given them safe haven in Afghanistan. Read more

Why did America really go to Afghanistan in the first place Was it to catch Osama bin Laden take control of Afghanistan or to help Afghanistan be free again?

BACKGROUND: After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush demanded that Afghanistan close down the terrorist training camps run by Al-Qaeda, and give up Osama bin Laden and other leaders of Al-Qaeda so they could be put on trial. The Taliban government of Afghanistan refused. The war in Afghanistan started on October 7, 2001 with an aerial bombing campaign against the Taliban. This helped the organized groups of Afghani people who were already fighting the Taliban. The Taliban was removed from power but is still a strong force in Afghanistan, as of December 2009.TALIBAN: The United States went in response to the September 11th attacks arguing that Osama bin Laden and his group Al-Qaeda were behind the attacks and could be located in Afghanistan. However, according to the Taliban before and after 9/11 Osama bin Laden was no longer in the country since 2000. This is strong to dispute since the U.S. has not been able to track his actions. The campaign was certainly not to free Afghanistan, since the U.S. agreed that the Taliban could remain in power so long as they handed Al-Qaeda figures over. That's the official reason, but, look at the geography of the middle east. Afghanistan is in the middle of the middle east, perfect staging area for invasions into countries such as Iran.Money has ruined this world, it has caused such a disaster and just to let you know that the War in Afghanistan will be lost by America soon, the real reason America invades any countries in the Middle East is because of OIL, that is why they have a problem with Iran using Nuclear technology because if Iran develops Nuclears it is dangerous to America, but if America arms itself with Nuclears then the world is safe? All you people are after are Muslims and all America is done is made people hate Muslims and especially Pakistanis for some reason. Also Abraham Lincoln stated that " America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves" so that should show that the Talibans are not a threat to America, but America itself is a threat to America.

How did Afghanistan get its money?

Afghanistan received the gross sum of their money through two primary means. The first was the oil within the country. They were able to extract and sell their oil to foreign markets. There second means of income was through war. The United States funded the Taliban in the 80's for a war against the Soviets, and a considerable amount of money flowed through the government.

Do Afghanistan women get education?

Prior to the Taliban rule, the majority of Afghan women actually were educated and made up 50% of civilian government workers, 70% of schoolteachers and 40% of doctors in the capital, Kabul. During the Taliban rule, however, women's education was outlawed and many women found running "underground schools" were severely punished. Now, after the overthrow of the Taliban, women are able to be educated again under their new constitution -accepted in 2004- which gave men and women equal rights under the law.

What are facts about the taliban?

(Introduction) Afghanistan, a troublesome country, struggle`s everyday to put an end to the production of the illegal drug, opium, that is being produced everyday under the Taliban`s control. The Taliban plays a major role in the continuance of the illegal opium production by supporting, encouraging, and demanding the continuance of the opium production, which leads to violence with the innocent people if they don't corporate with the Taliban.(Background History) The Taliban, a radically militant Islamic movement appeared in late 1994, and controlled 90 percent of Afghanistan between 1996-2001. The term "Taliban" comes from the Persian and Pashtu plural of the Arabic word Talib (Seeker of knowledge). Subsequently, they banned female access to education and employment, and imposed draconian Islamic laws that called for severe punishments, including the stoning death of proven adulterers and the amputating of thieves' hands and feet. Despite their strict beliefs and anti- drug profiling, the Taliban could not resist using opium to fund its activities, underlining the movement`s poor understanding and interpretation of Islamic law. The steepest challenge is the burgeoning drug trade, which funds not just the Taliban attacks, but has created a general climate of lawlessness throughout the country with violence. Opium has been cultivated and consumed by human beings since at least the third millennium. Afghanistan has been affected by opium since the twentieth century, when opium was spread throughout the Golden Crescent (Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan).Due to this, Afghanistan is accounting for 93 percent of the world's opium production. (International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences, and Reins, Thomas)(Supporting) Over 18 years of internal warfare has left the country with extremepoverty, massive unemployment and little hope of an economy being rebuilt inthe near future, but The Taliban supports the production of opium by gaining thetrust of the farmers and civilians who grow the opium by giving out food, money, and cloths during the holy holiday of Ramadan. Once the Taliban gains the trustof the farmers and civilians, the Taliban can ask them to pretty much dowhatever they want for them. The lack of action to stop production is suspectedto be due to the opium industry's financial support to the Taliban militia. In orderto support the protection of the farmers and the opium, the Taliban buysweapons with some of the money they made from selling opium, to give to theirfellow Taliban to kill any militia. The farmers only see the money rolling in as theirpoppy crops disappear in wagons, which is promised by the Taliban becausethe farmers don't want to see the end result of their crop. (Willems, Peter.)(Encourages) One way the Taliban encourages the farmers to make opium forthem is they tell the farmers that if you switch your crops from wheat to opium, you can make more money and support your family better, but although the motivation behind the Taliban decision to allow the opium industry to flourish is unclear, what motivates the farmers is obvious. Over 18 years of internal warfare has left the country with extreme poverty, massive unemployment and little hope of an economy being rebuilt in the near future. The Taliban have also encouraged the farmers and civilians who grow the opium by telling them that they will protect them from the militia. All of this seems to work due to the fact that Afghanistan is accounting for 93 percent of the world`s opium production. (Willems, Peter.)(Demands) The Taliban demands the production of opium because without the money that they make from selling the opium, the Taliban wouldn't have as much money as they do today. Without the money, the Taliban cannot buy weapons, recruit new members, or even pay the farmers who grow the opium in the first place. If a farmer refuses to grow the opium, depending on how bad the Taliban need it, the Taliban will demand that they grow the opium for them or they will burn down their other crops or house, beat them, or even kill them. Because of this, most of the farmers do corporate with the Taliban because they don't want to be injured or killed. The harsh demands that the Taliban ask from the farmers do tire them out, which leads to the farmers not producing enough opium to fit the Taliban`s needs.(Conclusion) From this, Afghanistan struggles to put an end to the production of the illegal drug, opium, that is being produced under the Taliban`s control. The Taliban plays a major role in the continuance of the illegal opium production by supporting, encouraging, and demanding the continuance of the opium production.
